Shubman Gill is looking flawless, like Virat Kohli in his purple patch, says Abhishek Nayar

Abhishek Nayar, the former India assistant coach, has heaped praise on Shubman Gill after the India captain's commanding knock in the first ODI against England at Edgbaston. Gill struck an unbeaten 80 off 75 balls on Tuesday, July 14, steering India to victory before retiring hurt in the 26th over, forced to make way due to a hamstring injury.

The stunning half-century helped India chase down a target of 259 with six wickets in hand and 4.4 overs remaining, handing the touring side their first win of a difficult UK tour. It was their first triumph after suffering 2-0 and 4-0 T20 series losses to Ireland and England, respectively, offering India a morale boost heading into the series decider.

"I was reminded of the time when Virat Kohli came into the team and reached his purple patch. It seemed like Virat Kohli would score runs whenever he batted. Shubman Gill is looking just like that because he is looking flawless," Nayar said on JioStar.

"It doesn't feel like he was having difficulty at any point, whether it was fast bowling or seam," he added.

The experienced coach underlined the India opener's composed approach throughout his stay at the crease. While senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were removed in quick succession, Gill showed no signs of pressure.

"Rohit Sharma was also having difficulties, but you never saw Shubman Gill under pressure. You never saw Shubman out of place, whether it was spin or pace. Because of injury or cramp, unfortunately, he didn't get that hundred, but he looks like a million bucks. Looks like a person who is possessed and in a great space as a cricketer and a captain," Nayar added.

Gill's early exit raised concern about his availability for Thursday's second ODI in Cardiff. However, Nayar outlined plans to manage the injury depending on its nature.

"It needs to be seen what the injury is. Was it cramps, or was there a pull? If there is a strain, it becomes difficult because you cannot recover in one-and-a-half days. If it's mere cramps, those things can easily be managed through electrolytes. You put in the fluids. You can take an IV if possible. There are many things you can do," he explained.
