Shubman Gill sits out Day 1 of warm-up match against SLC XI with finger injury, KL Rahul to captain
KL Rahul has been confirmed as India's captain for the warm-up match against SLC XI in Colombo after Shubman Gill was ruled out of the opening day's play as a precautionary measure. The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the development on August 7, 2026, ahead of the three-day fixture.
Gill hurt his right ring finger during the team's practice session on August 6, 2026, in Colombo. The Indian team's medical staff is currently looking after Gill's progress and will assess his condition over the coming days. The board has not indicated any change to Gill's status as the appointed Test captain for the series, and his absence from Day 1 is described as precautionary.
"Captain Shubman Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during India's practice on Thursday. As a precautionary measure, he will not take the field on Day 1 of the warm-up game against SLC XI. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress. KL Rahul will lead the team in Gill's absence," the BCCI said in a statement on X.

The warm-up match against SLC XI is India's only scheduled preparation fixture before the two-Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins on August 15, 2026. The three-day game in Colombo therefore carries significant importance as the squad's final competitive outing before the first Test.
Gill's finger was struck on two separate occasions during Thursday's session. The first blow came while he was batting in the nets against Gurnoor Brar. Shortly afterwards, he took a second hit to the same finger during a slip-catching drill.
Despite the discomfort from both incidents, Gill did not leave the ground immediately. He received treatment on the field and then returned to the nets to resume batting. However, the cumulative effect of the two blows led the BCCI Medical Team to keep him away from the field on the opening day of the warm-up fixture while they complete their assessment.
Rahul steps into the leadership role for the warm-up match on a temporary basis, with Gill's Test captaincy for the series remaining unchanged at this stage. The BCCI has framed the decision purely as a precaution, and no further details about Gill's availability for subsequent days of the warm-up game have been confirmed.
The two-Test series against Sri Lanka begins on August 15, 2026, giving the BCCI Medical Team just over a week to evaluate Gill's right ring finger before the first Test. No recovery timeline or return-to-play date has been provided by the board. The medical staff will continue their assessment in the days ahead to determine whether Gill is fit to lead India when the series gets underway.
