Shubman Gill to captain Fazilka Falcons in Sher-e-Punjab T20 League, says youth platform bigger than winning trophy

Shubman Gill has been appointed captain of Fazilka Falcons for the 2026 Sher-e-Punjab T20 League. The announcement was confirmed on August 23, ahead of the tournament's opening on August 30.

Gill, who currently serves as India's captain in both ODI and Test cricket, will bring his leadership experience to the domestic Punjab franchise. He has made clear that his primary focus in this role is not lifting the trophy but giving young players a meaningful platform to develop their game.

"I am very excited to lead the Fazilka Falcons. We have a very talented and exciting group of players, and I am really looking forward to working with the team. It will be a great opportunity for all of us to learn from each other and play some good cricket," Gill said. I would like to thank the Punjab Cricket Association for organising the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League. It is a very important platform for young and talented cricketers from Punjab. They get the opportunity to perform against quality players, gain experience and show what they can do. Gill has stated that providing a platform for young players is a bigger priority for him than winning the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League trophy. This outlook reflects a leadership philosophy centred on nurturing talent rather than chasing immediate results.

"For young players, it is important to believe in their ability and stay calm when they are under pressure. I want to help them understand the game better, whether it is about reading a situation, making decisions or handling pressure. Obviously, winning the trophy is something we will be aiming for, but for me, success will also be about seeing young players from our team grow during the tournament," he said.

The Sher-e-Punjab T20 League itself serves as a competitive domestic structure for Punjab-based talent, and Gill's involvement as captain adds significant visibility to the tournament and to the players who feature alongside him.

The 2026 Sher-e-Punjab T20 League is a six-team competition with 27 matches spread across a two-week window from August 30 to September 13, 2026. The tournament opener is scheduled for August 30, 2026.

Six franchises will compete for the title: Fazilka Falcons, Ludhiana Lions, Amritsar Soormaaz, Jalandhar Warriors, Mohali Kings and Bathinda Royals. The spread of teams across major Punjab cities reflects the league's intent to represent the state's cricketing geography broadly.

With Gill leading Fazilka Falcons, the tournament carries added national interest. His dual role as India's senior captain and a domestic franchise leader in this league underlines the significance the competition holds for Punjab cricket.
