SL vs IND 2026: Sri Lanka vs India Highlights & Review – 1st Test, Day 5

India defeated Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test at the Galle International Stadium on Wednesday, August 19, on the final day of the encounter.

Sri Lanka started the day at 84/4, needing another 288 runs to win the match. Sonal Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva added 58 runs to the overnight score before the latter was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja. Niroshan Dickwella, who had scored a gritty half-century in the last game, couldn't make much of an impact as Prasidh Krishna got the better of him once again.

Dinusha backed up his century in the first innings with 84 in the second. Keshara Nuwantha chipped in with a sedate 20 but Manav Suthar made light work of the tailenders, finishing with figures of 6/55. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 206 in 77.4 overs in the second session.

Sonal Dinusha had scored his maiden Test century in the first innings. He took that confidence into the second innings, scoring 84 off just 128 balls, belting eight fours and one six. Dinusha's partnership with de Silva gave Sri Lanka hopes of an improbable win, even on a crumbling pitch.

The left-arm spinner has been going from strength to strength in international cricket. After his stunning debut against Afghanistan, Suthar bagged a four-for in the first innings against Sri Lanka. However, in the second innings, he was even more threatening, finishing with figures of 6/55 in 23.4 overs.
