SLC pledges full cooperation on Jaffna Kings owner arrest, LPL 2026 to proceed as planned
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has addressed the report of the arrest of Jaffna Kings' franchise owner over alleged match-fixing offences. The board has said that it will fully cooperate alongside the Sri Lanka Police's Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports over alleged match-fixing offences. The arrest was made hours ahead of the official launch of the 2026 Lanka Premier League, scheduled for Friday. The detention has cast a shadow over the tournament's opening day, though organisers confirmed the competition will proceed as planned.
Police alleged the suspect attempted to solicit match-fixing from three players who have represented the Sri Lankan national team, including both current and former cricketers. Sri Lanka has some of the world's toughest laws against sports corruption under the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act, which criminalises match-fixing, spot-fixing and other forms of manipulation in sport, with offenders facing substantial fines and prison sentences upon conviction. Police said further investigations are underway, and additional details are expected to be released.
"Sri Lanka Cricket, together with the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026, will extend its fullest cooperation to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) for the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports should any assistance be sought in connection with any inquiry arising from the matter," SLC said via a media release on Friday, July 17.
"As the governing body of the Lanka Premier League 2026, Sri Lanka Cricket reiterates its unwavering commitment to protecting the integrity of the tournament and will not tolerate any form of corruption, misconduct, or foul play by any stakeholder associated with the league," it added.
The Jaffna Kings franchise is owned by Sports Commune, a sports management company led by Indian entrepreneurs Manjot Kalra and Mayank Goel, who took over ahead of the LPL 2026 season. Kalra is known for his unbeaten century in the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup final, which helped India lift the title. Goel is the founder of Softsecure Infotech and Shree Dhyan Insurance Brokers.
The tournament will begin on Thursday, July 17, at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC), Colombo, with a grand opening ceremony that includes live musical performances, team introductions, the official trophy reveal, and a spectacular 500-drone light show. The opening match will be between Jaffna Kings and Galle Gallants at the Sinhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground in Colombo, with the final scheduled at the R. Premadasa Stadium on 8 August 2026. Five franchise teams will take part in a double round-robin league followed by a playoff stage. Despite the arrest, league officials have assured stakeholders that the competition will continue without disruption, and all match schedules remain unchanged.
"Sri Lanka Cricket has a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and unethical practices and will ensure that all necessary steps are taken to safeguard the integrity of the Lanka Premier League 2026 and ensure that the tournament is conducted with the utmost dignity and integrity," SLC said further.
