Smriti Mandhana becomes fifth batter to score 5000 runs in women's ODIs, fastest to reach the mark

Smriti Mandhana became the fifth woman to register 5000 runs in women's ODIs. She also became the first women's player to notch up 1000 runs in a calendar year. Smriti had already broken Belinda Clark's 970-run tally in a year in India's previous Women's World Cup clash against South Africa.
Ahead of the current match against Australia, Smriti was only 18 shy of amassing 1000 runs in the calendar year, and she attained the historic milestone with a maximum off Sophie Molineux's bowling on the third ball of her first over.
Speaking of the ongoing tournament, Smriti did not have a particularly good start as she could score only eight in the tournament-opener against Sri Lanka before being falling for 23 each against Pakistan and South Africa.
However, she made amends against Australia and reached to her 33rd ODI fifty at the ACA-VDCA Stadium, as the crowd appreciated the moment wholeheartedly. India's vice-captain brought up her half-century at more than a run-a-ball, getting to the landmark on the first ball of the 19th over of the innings. She eventually fell for a well-crafted 66-ball 80, including nine fours and three sixes.
Speaking of how Smriti's 2025 in ODIs has panned out, she has scored in single digits on only one occasion (the Women's World Cup match against Sri Lanka). Her highest score so far has been the 135 off 80 against Ireland in January 2025. She recently scored two consecutive centuries against the Aussies in the second (117 off 91 in New Chandigarh) and third ODI (125 off 63) of the series prior to the mega event.
