'Sooryavanshi will break this record one day' - Jos Buttler reacts after becoming men's T20 cricket's leading run-scorer

England star Jos Buttler reflected on his remarkable journey after becoming the leading run-scorer in men's T20 cricket, while also backing India's teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to eventually surpass his record.

Buttler achieved the milestone during Manchester Super Giants' The Hundred 2026 clash against Welsh Fire, overtaking former West Indies captain Kieron Pollard to move to the top of the all-time run-scoring charts in men's T20 cricket.

Speaking after the achievement, Buttler reflected on how dramatically his fortunes have changed over the last few months. The former England skipper admitted that he had struggled for runs not long ago but credited his determination for helping him rediscover his best form.

“Funny how quickly cricket can change. One day you're the dog, one day you're the lamp post. A few months ago I was struggling for form. And then, in the last few weeks especially, I probably feel like I'm batting as well as I ever have. It's been a lot of fun. You've only ever got two options. You either give up or you got the energy to keep going and try to rediscover your form. So that's all the things I've been focussing on. I've had energy and determination to try and get back there, and that's what I've done,” Buttler said while speaking to Sky Cricket.

The veteran batter also expressed his delight at climbing to the top of a list that features some of the greatest T20 players of all time. However, he jokingly predicted that 15-year-old Indian prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could eventually break his record.

“Yeah it's really cool actually to think you've got the most T20 runs out of everyone,” Buttler said. “Someone will surpass it one day, and his name's probably Sooryavanshi. But no, it's a proud moment.”

Sooryavanshi has emerged as one of the brightest young talents in world cricket over the past year. The fearless left-handed batter has earned widespread praise for his explosive strokeplay.

Buttler also revealed that he had hoped to overtake Pollard during Manchester Super Giants' previous fixture against MI London, where the former West Indies all-rounder was present in the opposition dugout.

“Actually, we played against MI London last game, would've been nice to get past Polly while he was there, sat in the dugout,” he added.

“Some great names on there, some special players, so yeah, I'm really proud of that.”

Buttler is currently the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament, having amassed 277 runs in six innings at a staggering average of 92.33 and a strike rate of 178.70, playing a pivotal role in Manchester Super Giants' impressive season.
