Sophie Devine’s all-round brilliance powers Southern Brave to record-breaking win over Oval Invincibles – The Hundred Women’s 2025

Southern Brave produced one of the most dominant displays ever seen in The Hundred Women’s competition as they hammered Oval Invincibles by a record margin of 89 runs at the Rose Bowl on August 18. The victory was built on a perfect combination of fearless batting and ruthless bowling, led by Sophie Devine, who set the tone with two quick wickets at the start of Oval’s chase. With this win, Brave not only maintained their unbeaten run but also surged to the top of the table. Oval, on the other hand, endured a nightmarish outing, folding meekly for just 72, their batters failing to counter the relentless pressure applied by Brave’s attack. Georgia Adams’ side also registered their highest total of the season, making 161/6 before rolling Oval over inside 83 balls.
Asked to bat first, the Brave’s openers Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge gave their team the ideal platform with a 59-run stand. Bouchier, the aggressor, looked in sublime touch as she struck a quick 34 off 23 balls before falling to Tash Farrant at deep mid-wicket. Wyatt-Hodge kept the scoreboard ticking with her run-a-ball 26 but was undone by Phoebe Franklin’s clever slower ball. South African star Laura Wolvaardt then took charge, smashing a blazing 36 off just 19 deliveries, including a massive slog-swept six, before being dismissed by Amanda-Jade Wellington. Devine added a handy 19, though she was unlucky to be run out following a mix-up with Freya Kemp. The young Kemp, however, made up for it in style, hammering 24 off 11 balls with two sixes in the final overs. That late flourish helped Brave post 161/6, their highest score this season, ensuring Oval were immediately under pressure before their chase even began.

Defending 162, Brave’s bowlers came out with intent and energy. Devine set the tone, knocking over Meg Lanning with a peach of a delivery before removing captain Lauren Winfield-Hill in the same set. From that point, Oval never recovered. Lauren Bell delivered a double blow, removing Alice Capsey and Paige Scholfield with consecutive short deliveries to leave Oval reeling at 28/4. The procession continued as Adams and Tilly Corteen-Coleman chipped in, while off-spinner Mady Villiers ripped through the middle order with figures of 3/17.
The only resistance came from Amanda Wellington, who top-scored with 18 at No. 8, but even she could not lift Oval out of misery. With Marizanne Kapp and Ashleigh Gardner only managing 10 apiece, Oval crumbled for just 72 in 83 balls, avoiding the all-time lowest total but suffering the heaviest defeat in terms of margin in The Hundred. The Brave’s devastating all-round show sealed their fifth consecutive victory and cemented their status as the team to beat this season.
