South Africa announce squad for historic Zimbabwe T20I tour

South Africa Women have named a 15-member squad for a historic tour of Zimbabwe, where the two sides will contest a five-match T20I series from September 11 to 19 at Queen's Sports Club in Bulawayo. This will be the first time South Africa Women have toured Zimbabwe, and the series marks the first-ever T20I meeting between the two nations.

Laura Wolvaardt will lead the side as regular captain. The squad includes three uncapped players: 21-year-old seamer Caitlin Wyngaard, former South Africa Under-19 Women's standout Nthabiseng Nini, and off-spinner Luyanda Nzuza.

Nine players who were not part of the recent ICC Women's T20 World Cup in England have been brought back into the fold, among them Faye Tunnicliffe, Anneke Bosch, Ayanda Hlubi, Eliz-Mari Marx, Seshnie Naidu, Nondumiso Shangase, Miané Smit, Sinalo Jafta, and Karabo Meso.

All three uncapped players made their case through strong performances for the South Africa Emerging Women. Wyngaard caught the selectors' attention during the Emerging side's recent tour against Bangladesh Emerging, where she impressed with her seam bowling. Nini and Nzuza also delivered standout displays for the same team, giving the national selectors enough evidence to hand them their first senior call-ups.

Nini had previously represented South Africa at the Under-19 Women's level before stepping up to the Emerging setup. Nzuza's inclusion as an off-spinner adds variety to a bowling attack that already carries a mix of pace and spin options. Their selection signals that the national selectors are focused on building depth ahead of future assignments.

Despite both nations running active women's cricket programmes for several years, senior-level meetings between the two sides have been extremely rare. South Africa and Zimbabwe have met only twice before at senior level, both encounters coming during an ODI quadrangular series held in Potchefstroom in May 2017.

Zimbabwe Women did not qualify for the 10th ICC Women's T20 World Cup, which was held in England and Wales from June 12 to July 5, 2026. South Africa Women were part of that tournament. The five-match T20I series in Bulawayo will therefore be a landmark occasion for Zimbabwe Women's cricket as they host a Test-playing nation in this format for the first time. The five matches are scheduled on September 11, 13, 15, 17, and 19.
