South Africa unveil strong 15-member squad for historic Women’s T20I series against Zimbabwe

South Africa Women are set to embark on a historic tour of Zimbabwe next month, with the Proteas naming a 15-member squad for a five-match T20I series in Bulawayo. The tour will mark the first time South Africa Women have travelled to Zimbabwe, while the series will also see the two teams meet in the shortest format for the first time.

Regular captain Laura Wolvaardt will continue to lead the South African side during the series, which will be played at Queen’s Sports Club from September 11 to 19. The five T20Is are scheduled for September 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19. The squad features a blend of established internationals and promising young talent. South Africa have also recalled nine players who were not part of their campaign at the recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales.

Among those returning to the national setup are Anneke Bosch, Faye Tunnicliffe, Ayanda Hlubi, Eliz-Mari Marx, Seshnie Naidu, Nondumiso Shangase, Miané Smit, Sinalo Jafta and Karabo Meso.

The series gives several players an opportunity to make an impression as South Africa continue to strengthen their squad and build greater depth beyond their established core.

The most notable feature of the squad is the inclusion of three uncapped players — Caitlin Wyngaard, Nthabiseng Nini and Luyanda Nzuza. Wyngaard, a 21-year-old seamer, earned her opportunity after impressing for the South Africa Emerging Women during their recent series against Bangladesh Emerging. Her performances with the ball caught the selectors’ attention and ultimately resulted in her maiden senior call-up.

Nini has also taken a different route into the national team. The youngster previously represented South Africa at Under-19 level before progressing to the Emerging setup. Her performances there helped convince the selectors that she was ready for the next step. Nzuza, meanwhile, brings an off-spin option to the squad. Her displays for the Emerging side were enough to earn her first senior selection, adding another dimension to South Africa’s bowling resources. The trio’s inclusion underlines South Africa’s desire to develop a wider pool of international-ready players ahead of future assignments.

Although South Africa and Zimbabwe have established women’s cricket programmes, meetings between the two senior sides have been remarkably uncommon. The teams have played only twice previously at senior level, with both encounters taking place during an ODI quadrangular series in Potchefstroom in May 2017. Zimbabwe’s failure to qualify for the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup meant the two teams did not cross paths at the global tournament, which was staged in England and Wales from June 12 to July 5.

The upcoming five-match series will therefore carry considerable significance for Zimbabwe. It will give the hosts an opportunity to face a Test-playing nation in a T20I series on home soil and provide valuable exposure to their players. For South Africa, the tour offers an ideal platform to assess emerging talent while giving returning players a chance to stake their claim for future international assignments.
