Sri Lanka or India? Wasim Jaffer predicts scoreline of the upcoming Test series

India are set to return to Sri Lanka for a Test series for the first time in nearly a decade as the two Asian rivals prepare to lock horns in a two-match contest next month. The opening Test will be played at the Galle International Stadium from August 15 to 19, followed by the second and final Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo from August 23 to 27. With Shubman Gill leading a new-look Indian side, expectations are high as the visitors aim to continue their impressive record against Sri Lanka in the longest format. Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has shared his prediction regarding the outcome of this series.

Ahead of the much-anticipated series, Jaffer shared his prediction during a discussion on his YouTube channel and expressed confidence that India would emerge victorious in both matches.

The former Test batter believes India’s squad is significantly stronger than Sri Lanka’s on paper and feels anything short of a 2-0 triumph would fall below expectations. While acknowledging Sri Lanka’s ability to compete at home, Jaffer maintained that India’s superior batting depth and bowling resources make them overwhelming favourites.

“I would say India should win the series 2-0. If you look at both teams on paper, the Indian side is much stronger. So, if India don’t win the series 2-0, it would be a disappointing outcome. Sri Lanka is a very good team, there’s no doubt about that. But on paper, I feel we are much stronger,” Jaffer said.

India’s previous Test tour of Sri Lanka came in 2017 when Virat Kohli’s side dominated the hosts with a comprehensive 3-0 series victory. That tour showcased India’s command in overseas Asian conditions, and Jaffer believes the current team has the quality to produce another convincing performance.

Historically, India have enjoyed the upper hand in the rivalry. The two nations have met in 46 Test matches, with India winning 22, Sri Lanka registering seven victories, while 17 encounters have ended in draws. The numbers underline India’s long-standing dominance, although Sri Lanka have often proved difficult opponents on turning tracks at home.

The upcoming series will also provide another major examination for Shubman Gill as India’s Test captain. Having recently taken over the leadership responsibilities, Gill will be expected to guide the team through conditions that traditionally favour spin bowling and demand patience from batters.

Galle and Colombo have historically offered assistance to spinners as matches progress, making shot selection and discipline vital for visiting teams. India’s batting lineup will need to adapt quickly to the slower surfaces, while the bowlers will have to exploit the conditions just as effectively.

Despite the home advantage, Sri Lanka will rely on their familiarity with the pitches and experienced spin attack to challenge the visitors. However, India’s balanced squad, featuring quality batters and a varied bowling unit, has strengthened confidence among former cricketers that the tourists can dictate the series.
