Subramaniam Badrinath names 2 players CSK should target in the trade ahead of IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings will head into the IPL 2027 season determined to turn the page after enduring another underwhelming campaign in 2026. The five-time champions failed to qualify for the playoffs for the third successive year, finishing eighth on the points table with just six wins from 14 league matches. For a franchise that has built its legacy on consistency and success, the recent decline has sparked discussions over the need for bold changes ahead of the next season.
With the trade window expected to generate plenty of speculation, former India batter Subramaniam Badrinath has identified two marquee all-rounders he believes could transform CSK’s fortunes. According to him, Chennai should make every effort to pursue Mumbai Indians icon and England star to strengthen their squad for IPL 2027.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Badrinath suggested that Chennai should not hesitate to enter trade discussions for Hardik Pandya, even though convincing Mumbai Indians to part ways with their captain would be far from easy. Mumbai Indians also endured a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, finishing ninth in the standings, leading to speculation about possible changes within the squad. While there has been no official indication that Hardik is available, Badrinath believes CSK should explore every possibility. He even proposed a potential player swap involving Shivam Dube, suggesting the Indian all-rounder could be offered in exchange if negotiations gather pace.
“MI won’t give away Hardik Pandya for nothing. They’ll want at least two players in return. CSK should trade Shivam Dube for Hardik as an all-rounder swap. CSK will be in the discussions for Hardik but they probably just don’t want to reveal it for now,” Badrinath said.
Apart from Hardik, Badrinath also highlighted Ben Stokes as another player who could fit perfectly into Chennai’s plans. The England all-rounder recently retired from international cricket, a decision that could allow him to focus more on franchise cricket if he chooses to continue playing in global T20 leagues. Stokes has already experienced life at CSK during the 2023 season, although injuries prevented him from making a significant impact. A fully fit Stokes, however, remains one of the most influential all-rounders in world cricket, capable of changing matches with both bat and ball while also bringing invaluable leadership qualities.
“It’ll be a dream situation for CSK if they can land Hardik and get Ben Stokes,” added Badrinath.

Should Badrinath’s vision become reality, Chennai Super Kings could enter IPL 2027 with one of the most formidable all-round departments in the competition. Hardik’s explosive batting, seam bowling and captaincy experience, combined with Stokes’ match-winning ability and big-game temperament, would instantly elevate the balance of the squad.
Both players have repeatedly delivered under pressure throughout their careers and possess the versatility that modern T20 cricket demands. Their presence would also ease the burden on CSK’s younger core while adding proven leaders to the dressing room.
Of course, signing both stars would be far easier said than done. Mumbai Indians may be reluctant to let Hardik leave, while Stokes’ availability for the entire IPL season would depend on his franchise commitments and fitness.
