Subramaniam Badrinath names 3 ‘X factors’ in the IND vs SA 2025 Test series

The stage is set for yet another gripping chapter in the India–South Africa rivalry, as the two sides prepare to clash in the first Test starting November 14 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. With the series featuring a mix of seasoned stars and exciting fresh talent, fans are eagerly awaiting a high-quality contest between two highly competitive red-ball units. As anticipation builds, former India batter Subramaniam Badrinath has identified three key players who he believes could become the decisive X-factors in this much-awaited series.
Sharing his insights on Star Sports Tamil, Badrinath highlighted three individuals — one from South Africa and two from India — who could tilt the series with their impact performances.
Dewald Brevis – A Proteas wildcard
From the visiting camp, Badrinath selected 22-year-old prodigy Dewald Brevis, calling him a player with the potential to surprise India in unfamiliar conditions. Although Brevis has only four Tests under his belt since making his debut in Zimbabwe earlier this year, his natural stroke-making ability and fearless mindset make him a dangerous prospect.
Despite an early average of 23 after six Test innings, Brevis’ reputation as a high-impact batter precedes him. Badrinath believes that if the youngster finds rhythm in Kolkata, he could play a defining role for the Proteas.
Sai Sudharsan – India’s rising hope
On the Indian side, Badrinath named Sai Sudharsan as one of the major X-factors. The 24-year-old left-hander, who made his Test debut on India’s recent tour of England, has shown glimpses of promise with 273 runs in five matches at an average of 30.33.
With stiff competition for middle-order spots, the South Africa series could be a crucial opportunity for Sudharsan to cement his place in the setup. Badrinath emphasised that the youngster’s temperament and ability to dig in against quality pace attacks make him a batter to watch out for.

Kuldeep Yadav – India’s proven match-winner
Badrinath’s final pick was Kuldeep Yadav, one of India’s most dangerous red-ball performers on home soil. The left-arm wrist-spinner boasts an exceptional record in India, with 50 wickets in 11 home Tests at an average of 22.46, including three five-wicket hauls.
His variations, accuracy and ability to exploit turning tracks make him a constant threat. With the first Test expected to offer assistance to spinners, Kuldeep is poised to be a crucial weapon in India’s attack.
As both teams assemble with a blend of youth and experience, excitement among fans continues to grow. India will be led by Shubman Gill, supported by the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and Kuldeep. South Africa, captained by Temba Bavuma, bring familiar match-winners such as Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj.
