The Sydney Sixers have ushered in a new era by appointing former Australian all-rounder James Hopes as their head coach on a two-year deal. The announcement, made on Monday (May 4), signals a fresh direction for one of the most consistent teams in the Big Bash League as they aim to build on their strong legacy.
Hopes, 47, steps into his first full-time head coaching role after years of experience in assistant positions across franchise cricket. Known for his sharp cricketing acumen, particularly in bowling strategy, he replaces long-serving coach Greg Shipperd, who parted ways with the franchise following their runner-up finish in the most recent BBL season.
The Sixers, one of the most decorated teams in the tournament’s history, have lifted the BBL trophy three times and have consistently been among the top-performing sides. However, after narrowly missing out on the title last season, the management opted for a change in leadership to inject fresh ideas and energy into the squad.
Hopes’ appointment marks a significant step forward in his coaching journey. While this is his first stint as a head coach, he brings with him a wealth of experience gained from working behind the scenes with various teams. Notably, he has been serving as the bowling coach for Punjab Kings in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), where he has been credited with refining bowling units and developing young talent.
Having operated in high-pressure environments like the IPL, Hopes is expected to bring tactical depth and modern strategies to the Sixers’ setup. His familiarity with franchise cricket dynamics could prove crucial as teams continue to evolve in the fast-paced T20 landscape.
Reacting to his appointment, Hopes expressed both pride and enthusiasm at taking charge of such a prestigious franchise. He highlighted the Sixers’ strong culture and consistent performances as key factors that attracted him to the role.
“I’m incredibly honoured to join the Sydney Sixers, a club with a proud history and a strong identity built on consistency, competitiveness and connection with its fans. I’m excited to work with a talented playing group and contribute to the next phase of the Sixers’ success in the BBL,” said Hope in a statement.

Before transitioning into coaching, Hopes enjoyed a solid international career with Australia national cricket team. He represented Australia in 84 One-Day Internationals and 12 T20 Internationals, with his last appearance coming in 2010.
Renowned for his ability to contribute with both bat and ball, Hopes was considered a dependable allrounder during his playing days. His experience at the highest level of the game is expected to play a key role in mentoring players and handling pressure situations.
