The countdown to the 2025 edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) has officially begun, with fans eagerly awaiting the action-packed tournament set to commence on November 9. Brisbane Heat will face Melbourne Renegades in the curtain-raiser, marking the start of another thrilling season. Just days before the competition kicks off, the Sydney Sixers have made a major leadership announcement that has generated excitement among supporters and the cricket fraternity alike.
On Friday, November 7, the Sydney Sixers confirmed that star Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner has been appointed as the new captain of the franchise for the upcoming WBBL|11 season. Gardner takes over the reins from the iconic Ellyse Perry, who has been synonymous with the Sixers’ leadership since the team’s inception in 2015.
Gardner, one of the most accomplished and consistent performers in the WBBL, brings a wealth of experience and an impressive track record to the captaincy. The 27-year-old has featured in 135 matches for the Sixers – the most by any player in the team’s history. Over the years, she has accumulated 2,607 runs and claimed 102 wickets, making her the Sixers’ leading wicket-taker and third-highest run-scorer, behind Perry and Alyssa Healy.
The leadership promotion comes as a natural progression for Gardner, who has been steadily building her captaincy credentials across various T20 leagues. Earlier this year, she was entrusted with the leadership roles for Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and Trent Rockets in The Hundred, showcasing her growing stature as a global leader in women’s cricket. Her experience across different conditions and team environments is expected to bring a fresh, dynamic approach to the Sixers setup.
Speaking about her appointment, Gardner expressed her gratitude and excitement, emphasizing her long-standing connection with the Sixers family.
“It’s an honour to lead this amazing group of players who have been like family to me since day one. I’ve learned so much from Ellyse and other senior members of the squad, and I hope to continue the legacy of success and unity that defines the Sixers,” said Gardner in a media release.

Outgoing skipper Ellyse Perry, who guided the Sixers to two WBBL titles and several finals appearances, expressed her pride and confidence in Gardner’s leadership.
“It’s been an immense pleasure to lead the Sixers for the past decade. Ash has contributed enormously both on and off the field, and her passion for the game and growth as a leader will be a huge asset to the team,” Perry remarked in the club’s official statement.
The Sixers will kick off their WBBL 2025 campaign against Perth Scorchers at the W.A.C.A. Ground in Perth on November 9. With Gardner at the helm and a blend of seasoned stars and emerging talents, the Sixers will be aiming to reclaim their dominance and add a third championship to their illustrious record.
