Sydney Sixers have ushered in another major coaching change ahead of the 2026-27 Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), handing the reins of their women’s side to a familiar face from within the setup. The appointment comes after a series of coaching reshuffles at the franchise and signals the club’s intent to maintain continuity while building on last season’s strong performance.

Sydney Sixers Women have named Peter Clarke as their new head coach ahead of the upcoming WBBL season, bringing an end to months of movement within the club’s coaching ranks.

The latest appointment is the final piece of a coaching puzzle that began earlier this year. The Sixers had initially named James Hopes as head coach of their men’s side, but his decision to return to Queensland and join the Brisbane Heat left the role vacant. That led the franchise to promote Matthew Mott from the women’s team to the men’s setup, creating an opening that has now been filled by Clarke, who previously worked as Mott’s assistant.

By promoting from within, the Sixers have opted for stability and familiarity, with Clarke already well-acquainted with the squad and its environment ahead of the new campaign.

Clarke’s coaching journey has been anything but conventional. Before stepping into full-time coaching, he spent eight years as a sports psychologist with the Australian women’s cricket team, playing a key role in helping players develop the mental skills required to perform consistently on the international stage.

His transition into coaching saw him take charge at the University of Queensland before joining Cricket New South Wales in 2025 as women’s coach. Clarke quickly made an impression, leading the side to the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) final and earning recognition for his player-management skills and tactical approach.

His previous experience working alongside Matthew Mott with the Sixers also means he understands the team’s culture, expectations and playing group. That familiarity is expected to help ensure a smooth transition as the franchise prepares for another title challenge. The appointment also highlights the growing value of diverse coaching backgrounds in modern cricket, with Clarke becoming one of the few head coaches to rise through sports psychology before making his mark on the coaching circuit.

Clarke inherits a side that enjoyed an impressive campaign in the previous edition of the WBBL. The Sixers finished second on the points table after collecting 13 points from 10 matches, emerging as one of the competition’s most consistent teams during the league stage. However, their title aspirations came to an end in the Challenger, where they were beaten by the Perth Scorchers Women, falling one step short of reaching the final.

Despite that disappointment, the Sixers enter the new season with a solid foundation and a squad capable of challenging for the championship once again. The club will now hope that the continuity provided by Clarke’s promotion, coupled with his experience in player development and leadership, can help transform last season’s promise into WBBL silverware.
