Published - 08 Feb 2026, 15:19 IST | Updated - 08 Feb 2026, 15:55 IST
South Africa will face Canada in Group C, Match No. 9 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on February 9.
South Africa enter the tournament as the runners-up of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, having lost the final to India. The Proteas will be keen to start their campaign on a strong note in the current edition. Aiden Markram will lead the side, which features key players such as Tristan Stubbs, Quinton de Kock, Kagiso Rabada, and Keshav Maharaj.
Meanwhile, Canada made their maiden T20 World Cup appearance in 2024, where they registered a memorable victory over Ireland. They qualified for the 2026 edition after remaining unbeaten in the T20 World Cup Americas Regional Qualifier. Dilpreet Bajwa will captain the Canadian side, with Ravinderpal Singh, Navneet Dhaliwal, Shreyas Movva, and Shivam Sharma expected to play crucial roles.
The pitch is expected to offer an even contest between batters and bowlers. Batters will need to spend some time settling at the crease before accelerating and scoring big runs in the later stages of the innings. The bowling side may find it challenging, as the large ground dimensions make wicket-taking difficult.
This will be the first-ever T20I encounter between South Africa and Canada. As a result, the head-to-head record between the two sides in the format currently stands at 0-0.
Aiden Markram (Captain), Quinton de Kock (WK), Ryan Rickelton, Dewald Brevis, David Miller, George Linde, Corbin Bosch, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi
Navneet Dhaliwal, Yuvraj Samra, Kanwarpal Tathgur, Nicholas Kirton, Dilpreet Bajwa (Captain), Harsh Thaker, Shreyas Movva (WK), Ansh Patel, Jaskaran Singh, Shivam Sharma, Dilon Heyliger
Quinton de Kock could be the key batter in this clash. He brings immense experience from the IPL, having scored 2,915 runs in 102 T20 matches. More recently, he was in excellent form during the two-match T20I series against the West Indies, where he scored a century. If he carries that momentum forward, De Kock has the ability to dominate the Canadian bowling attack.
Right-arm pacer Kagiso Rabada could be the key bowler in this clash. He has taken 78 wickets in 72 T20 matches and is known for delivering breakthroughs for the Proteas at crucial moments. His four-over spell could prove decisive, as he has the ability to change the course of the game and trouble opposition batters with pace and precision.
