Sri Lanka on Sunday, February 1, formally announced their final squad for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which is all set to get underway on February 7. The co-hosts will be led by experienced all-rounder Dasun Shanaka, while Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis serve as the two wicketkeeping options in the star-studded squad.
Notably, Kamindu Mendis has made a surprise entry into the squad, whereas seasoned campaigner Dhananjaya de Silva has been left out of the squad owing to underwhelming recent form. De Silva is part of the ongoing T20I series against the visiting England side but has been ousted from the squad for the twenty-team tournament.
“A player like Dhananjaya is useful because of his all-round ability, especially in Sri Lankan conditions. But with his present form, his place in the team is a big question,” former Sri Lanka cricketer Russell Arnold had opined via Newswire.
Meanwhile, Pramod Madhushan has been replaced by Pavan Rathnayake to complete the eventual squad that will hit the ground running in the global event. The pace attack includes Dushmantha Chameera, Matheesha Pathirana, and Eshan Malinga, whereas Dunith Wellalage, Wanindu Hasaranaga, and Maheesh Theekshana are the spinners.
Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, Janith Liyanage, Kamindu Mendis, Kamil Mishara, Pavan Rathnayake, Dasun Shanaka (captain), Dunith Wellalage, Wanindu Hasaranga, Matheesha Pathirana, Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera, and Eshan Malinga
Placed in the Group B of the multinational event, the Lankan Lions will begin their campaign by crossing swords against Ireland on February 08 in Colombo. Their second group stage fixture will see them take on Oman four days later in Pallekele, followed by Australia on February 16 at the same venue. Shanaka & Co. are slated to play their last group stage match against Zimbabwe at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
