The ultimate dream is to coach England: Moeen Ali

Moeen Ali stepped away from international cricket in 2024 after a distinguished career spanning multiple formats. The 39-year-old has since remained active in domestic and franchise cricket, competing for Yorkshire in the T20 Blast and Southern Brave in the Hundred during the summer months. His transition from playing to coaching has begun informally, with involvement in England Lions development programmes.

Ali worked alongside Andrew Flintoff's backroom staff during an England Lions white-ball camp in the United Arab Emirates in February. The Birmingham-born player outlined his ambitions for the next phase of his career.

"The ultimate dream is to coach England, of course, but I know there is a lot of work to put in before that," Ali was quoted as saying by the Independent.

The former all-rounder is preparing himself for a formal coaching pathway. He is working towards gaining his England and Wales Cricket Board Level Three Qualification, a key credential for senior coaching roles. Ali views the coming months as a period of learning and preparation for greater responsibilities.

Ali draws parallels between his playing ambitions and his coaching aspirations. He recognises that the pathway to senior roles requires dedication and patience, much like his own journey through county cricket to international recognition.

"When you’re a young player learning to play county cricket the dream is to play for England and it’s the same with coaching. You never know how things turn out." Ali stated.

Ali stated that he would have a lot of time in the winter to learn more about coaching teams. He asserted that he is ready to gain experience and work hard as a coach.

“I’ve been asked about doing Lions stuff quite often but it’s been pretty difficult while I’m still playing, I think next year I’ll be a lot more available to do that,” Ali said.

"After this winter I’ll be more free to coach. Whether it’s the Lions, the under-19s, whatever they want, it’s something I’m really looking forward to doing. I want to gain my experience and put in the hard yards as a coach," he added.

Ali has identified specific technical areas where he believes coaching can make a difference to England's batters. His observations stem from his experience across international cricket and his understanding of the challenges English players face.

"With England batters in particular, we can get exposed big time – lots of bowled, lots of lbws," Ali mentioned.

“It’s about coaching technique, more than anything. I see a lot of coaches who are hands off and let players do their thing, as long as they are happy. But players like to be told sometimes and they don’t get told enough these days to be honest," he added.
