Top 3 contenders for India’s next T20I captain after Suryakumar Yadav

India’s T20I captaincy discussion has once again gained momentum, with reports suggesting that the BCCI is actively evaluating long-term leadership options ahead of the next World Cup cycle. While Suryakumar Yadav guided India to T20 World Cup glory, his recent dip in form has sparked speculation over a possible leadership change after IPL 2026.
With selectors closely monitoring performances and captaincy displays during IPL 2026, several young Indian players have emerged as strong contenders for the next phase of leadership.
Here are the three players who have emerged as strong contenders for India’s T20I captaincy in the evolving leadership discussion.
3. Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan has thrown his hat into the ring with some strong leadership displays with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and explosive batting as well. As a dynamic wicketkeeper-batter, he brings a different energy to the group. While he may not be the outright favourite at the moment, his recent form and aggressive approach have made him a name to watch in the captaincy discussion.
2. Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill remains a serious contender despite currently captaining India in ODIs and Tests. His elegant batting and growing leadership experience make him a natural fit for the white-ball setup. However, questions remain about whether the BCCI wants to burden him with all three formats or keep him focused on longer formats. Gill’s performances as Gujarat Titans (GT) captain in the IPL continue to be closely watched.

1. Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer currently stands as the top contender for the role. Having successfully captained Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to an IPL title in 2024 and now leading Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2026, Iyer has impressed with his calm demeanour and tactical awareness. His ability to handle pressure and groom young players has worked in his favour. Selectors view him as a ready-made option who can bring stability to the middle order while leading the side.
Iyer last played a T20I in 2023, but his strong domestic and IPL performances have kept him in the conversation. Many believe he could be handed the captaincy for the upcoming bilateral series after IPL 2026.
