Travis Head explains why Bangladesh Tests are going to be a different challenge

Australia enter their Test series against Bangladesh on top of the World Test Championship standings with seven wins from eight matches. The visitors have won five of their six previous Tests against Bangladesh, and the opening fixture begins in Darwin on August 13. Bangladesh were bowled out for just 54 against the Cricket Australia XI in their warm-up match, a result that might suggest a straightforward assignment for the home side.

Travis Head has reflected on the different mental approach required when Australia face lower-ranked opponents in World Test Championship competition. Head, who recently claimed his second consecutive Allan Border Medal, discussed the psychological shift that comes with playing teams outside the traditional powerhouse nations.

"There's going to be a lot of scrutiny around what goes on - it's a Test match and we're playing for World Test Championship points. Sometimes playing the better countries, you sit there with expectation. You go into a Test going, 'I just hope I get through it'. Then you may come up against a team like Bangladesh, with the week they've had and the expectation of, 'I really expect myself to get runs', and that's sometimes the hardest place to be, when you go out there expecting to (make runs)," Head told Cricket Australia.

The psychological challenge of managing expectations against weaker opponents differs significantly from facing established Test nations. Head acknowledged that the brutal nature of Test cricket demands a careful balance between confidence and composure, particularly when representing Australia in front of home crowds.

"Because the game is a brutal game. So I think it's just about tempering expectations over the next little period (and) through these two Tests. Coming up and representing your country is obviously quite a proud moment. To be in front of Territorians and knowing the journey I've gone through to be here is pretty cool. I probably cop more grief if I don't do well up here," Head said.

Head and Jake Weatherald are backed to establish their opening partnership for the series. Weatherald is set to continue at the top following Usman Khawaja's retirement. The second Test is scheduled for Mackay from August 22, with both matches carrying World Test Championship points.
