The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 concluded after more than two months of cricket, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally breaking their 17-year trophy drought to emerge as champions on Tuesday night. However, the joy of victory turned into a tragedy during the victory celebration in Bengaluru on Wednesday, where a stampede claimed the lives of 11 people.
The Garden City witnessed an overwhelming turnout as lakhs of fans converged around the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and nearby roads to celebrate with their beloved team. The size of the crowd rendered the city’s police force inadequate and struggling to maintain order.
Despite attempts by law enforcement to disperse and manage the crowd, thousands pressed against the stadium’s entrance gates in desperation to catch a glimpse of the players. The chaotic scenes quickly escalated which led to a fatal stampede.
RCB expressed deep sorrow over the incident while acknowledging their anger and disappointment at the way events unfolded. They emphasized that the safety and well-being of fans and the public are of utmost importance. The franchise called the incident tragic and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those affected.
"We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us. RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extends our heartfelt condolences to the affected families. Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program, and followed the guidance and advice of the local administration. We urge all our supporters to please stay safe", the statement read.
Several cricketers took to social media to express their shock and grief over the incident, mourning the lives lost and the unfortunate turn of events. The tragedy echoed the massive reception given to India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad in Mumbai last year.
