India's modern-day great Virat Kohli has witnessed cricket excellence across formats. However, when it comes to facing Australia, Kohli’s record has stood out. As the Men in Blue set to feature in the three-match ODI series against Australia starting October 19, 2025, many are waiting to watch the return of the batter who will be seen in Indian colours for the first time since the Champions Trophy 2025 victory.
Ever since his debut against the Aussies in 2009, Kohli has played in 50 ODIs against Australia, scoring 2,451 runs at an average of 54.46, including eight centuries and 15 fifties, with a top score of 123. Out of those 50 matches, 29 have come in Australia, where he has scored 1,327 runs at an average of 51.90, smashing five centuries and six fifties. His highest score Down Under is an unbeaten 133, which is one of the finest ODI knocks ever played in Australia.
The 36-year-old's ability to adapt to Australia’s fast and bouncy pitches has made him a fan favourite. The Delhi-born has anchored India’s chases, turned games single-handedly, and carried the team’s batting line-up. With 51 ODI centuries, he tops the list of the most centuries in this format. Across his illustrious career from 2008 to 2025, Kohli has featured in 302 ODIs, scoring 14,181 runs at an average of 57.88 and a strike rate of 93.34.
Ex-India coach on Virat Kohli's mindset before going to bat
His return to international cricket comes after a brief break following India’s victorious Champions Trophy campaign. The former skipper has chosen to focus exclusively on ODIs, his most successful format. The upcoming series against Australia not only sees his comeback but also a step in India’s preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
The series, featuring matches in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney, will witness Shubman Gill leading the ODI team. In a recent training session ahead of the first ODI, Kohli was spotted practicing alongside Rohit Sharma. The two veterans were seen spending significant time in the nets, getting used to the conditions.
Notably, this series could see Kohli break many records. The batter is just 54 runs away from surpassing Kumar Sangakkara’s tally of 14,234 ODI runs, which would make him the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history, behind only Sachin Tendulkar. He also stands on the brink of reaching 1,500 ODI boundaries, needing just over a dozen more to reach the milestone.
