Virat Kohli's bodyguard abuses accredited journalists at Cardiff, triggers BCCI policy debate
Virat Kohli's personal security representative has triggered a major row in Cardiff following allegations of verbal abuse toward accredited members of the press as India's squad arrived before the second ODI against England. Two journalists, Subhayan Chakraborty and Abhishek Tripathi, claimed they were filming the team's movement while positioned within the official media area with valid press credentials. The incident has opened up a broader conversation about the BCCI's external tour security protocols and whether Indian players under central contracts are permitted to rely on private bodyguards.
The alleged confrontation happened after Kohli had entered the team bus. According to the reporters' version, the bodyguard walked up and engaged in a heated exchange with one of them, using abusive language throughout the interaction. Even after the journalist produced their accreditation card proving their status as registered press, the security officer continued the verbal assault. Multiple reports indicated this was not an isolated occurrence, with suggestions that the same individual had clashed with media before.
"I don't give a shot about accreditation. Just f*ck off from here," the bodyguard said as quoted by multiple journalists on social media. The guard persisted with abusive remarks despite the journalist's repeated reminders of their official media status and documentation.
The row has grown more serious because the BCCI's rulebook is understood to prevent centrally contracted players from employing private security during bilateral overseas assignments, with official security handled by the BCCI and host country authorities. This appearance marks the first instance of a personal bodyguard accompanying an Indian player during a bilateral series. Multiple members of the media corps have called on the BCCI to conduct a formal investigation and issue disciplinary measures.
So far, the BCCI has remained silent, and Kohli has not made any public statement. If the allegations prove true and a BCCI centrally contracted player breached the contract terms by bringing an unauthorised personal guard, then the Indian team officials and the BCCI would likely review the case internally. Any breach of these requirements can trigger formal disciplinary action under the terms of central contracts, including official warnings, financial penalties, or additional sanctions depending on the findings.
Kohli remains part of the Indian ODI squad as the team prepares for Thursday, July 16, 2026, at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. India is currently leading the three-match series 1-0 and just needs another win to secure an unassailable 2-0 lead. Axar Patel delivered a match-winning all-round display with four wickets and an unbeaten 57 in the opener. The final match is scheduled for Lord's on Sunday, July 19.
