Virat Kohli's non-negotiable intensity changed India's fielding standards: T Dilip

T Dilip's tenure as India's fielding coach came to an end following the recent tour of England, after he served in that position for almost five years.

In a recent interview, Dilip reflected on the influence of senior players in shaping the team's fielding culture. He highlighted how Virat Kohli's approach had a cascading effect throughout the squad, creating a dynamic that elevated performance.

"With Virat Kohli, intensity is non-negotiable," Dilip said while speaking to JioStar after the end of his stint with the Indian team.

The fielding coach introduced the fielding medal during his tenure, a recognition system designed to honour outstanding fielding performances. This initiative became part of India's approach to celebrating defensive excellence alongside batting and bowling achievements. The medal recognised individual brilliance in the field and reinforced the importance of fielding as a core skill within the team's culture.

Dilip said that Kohli had the ability to maintain the same level of intensity, whether he was fielding at cover or short mid-wicket.

"You have seen him in the powerplay, how he is as a batsman, whether at cover or short mid-wicket, with his reflexes and with his dives, is admirable," Dilip stated.

Dilip also mentioned that the former India captain didn't let his guard down even during the latter stages of the innings, when fatigue can kick in.

"Even in the last series, he was putting in those dives and was sharp, always at you all the time. Even at this juncture of his career, he runs from long-on to long-on at either end during the death overs, and he is the first one to run out of the circle when the field is spread."

One of Dilip's most cherished memories came from India's T20 World Cup victory in Barbados on June 29, 2024. The tournament showcased the fielding improvements that had been developed during his coaching period. Suryakumar Yadav received the Best Fielder Medal after the final for his crucial catch, a moment that exemplified the standard of fielding the team had achieved.

Reflecting on that iconic victory, Dilip spoke about the atmosphere in the dressing room following the triumph.

"If I go back to my best moment, I think Barbados 2024, not just the trophy, but the dressing room atmosphere afterwards, the silence for a few seconds before it broke," Dilip said.
