Watch: Aaryavir Sehwag plays father Virender Sehwag's trademark back-foot shot in DPL 2026
Virender Sehwag's attacking instincts appear to have passed down a generation. His son, Aaryavir Sehwag, produced a moment in the Delhi Premier League 2026 that stopped viewers mid-scroll, playing a back-foot punch that bore a striking resemblance to one of the strokes most closely associated with the former India opener. Aaryavir was representing West Delhi Lions in Match 35 of the competition when the shot was played.
The innings itself was brief but eventful. Aaryavir scored 22 runs off 14 deliveries, hitting four boundaries before his time at the crease ended. Among those strokes, the backfoot punch drew the sharpest reaction, given how closely it mirrored the way Virender used to play the same shot during his international career.
The DPL's official social media account captured the comparison in a split-screen video. Aaryavir's shot occupies the top frame, while a clip of Virender playing a similar stroke from his playing days sits in the bottom frame. The two executions, from the initial movement through to the follow-through, appear almost identical, offering a vivid side-by-side look at how a batting trait can carry across generations.
All DPL 2026 matches, including Match 35, are held at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The tournament began on July 31, 2026, with West Delhi Lions entering as defending champions. The Lions won the 2025 edition by beating Central Delhi Kings in the final by six wickets.
Aaryavir is part of a well-stocked West Delhi Lions squad for the 2026 edition. Ayush Doseja captains the side, which also includes Nitish Rana, Suyash Sharma, Kulwant Khejroliya, Manan Bhardwaj, Ankit Kumar, and Shubham Dubey, among others.

Virender Sehwag is widely regarded as one of the most destructive opening batters the game has seen, built on a philosophy of attacking the ball from the first delivery. The back-foot punch was one of the strokes that defined his style across his international career. The DPL's video placed the two moments from different eras next to each other, letting the footage speak for itself and taking fans on a nostalgia trip.
