Veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Thursday, September 4. He stated that recurring injuries and giving opportunities to youngsters were the reasons behind him taking the decision to retire.
Mishra played 22 Tests, 36 ODIs, and 10 T20Is, finishing with 156 wickets. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), the 42-year-old accounted for 174 scalps from 162 matches at an average of 23.82 and an economy rate of 7.38, while representing multiple franchises up until the 2024 edition, where he played for the KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants.
Mishra also holds the record for the most hat-tricks in the IPL. He has three hat-tricks to his name. All three of them came while playing for different franchises. As he bids adie to a remarkable career filled with numerous accolades, CricTracker revisits all of his three hat-tricks in the Indian Premier League.
Mishra took his first IPL hat-trick in the inaugural season in 2008. He was playing for the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) against the Deccan Chargers at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi (now Arun Jaitley Stadium). In the first innings, the Daredevils posted 194/4, as Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan starred to slam vital half-centuries.
In the second innings, Mishra finished with excellent figures of 5/17 in four overs to help the hosts win the match by 12 runs. During his spell, the Delhi-born bagged a hat-trick, dismissing Dwaraka Ravi Teja, Pragyan Ojha, and RP Singh off consecutive deliveries in the final over. This was his first of the three he took later in his storied career in the cash-rich tournament.
Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) hosted Deccan Chargers at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on May 21, 2011. In the first innings, the visiting side amassed 198/2 in their 20 overs as Shikhar Dhawan and Dwaraka Ravi Teja smashed 95* and 60, respectively.
Apart from Adam Gilchrist, no other Punjab batter could live up to their potential in the run-chase. Amit Mishra finished with mind-boggling figures of 4/9 in his four-over spell. In the 16th over, he bagged a hat-trick, getting rid of Ryan McLaren, Mandeep Singh, and Ryan Harris. Punjab lost the match by 82 runs, and Mishra was given the Player of the Match award.
On this occasion, Mishra was representing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) versus Pune Warriors India at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium (formerly Subroto Roy Sahara Stadium) in Pune on April 17, 2013. The home side restricted SRH to 119/8 in 20 overs as Bhuvneshwar Kumar starred with a three-for.
However, Pune Warriors failed to chase down the dismal target, getting dismissed for 108 in 19 overs. Mishra took the wickets of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma, and Ashok Dinda in the 19th over, claiming a record-breaking third hat-trick, going past Yuvraj Singh's tally of two against his own team. Earlier in the innings, he had dismissed Angelo Mathews. Mishra finished with figures of 4/19 in four overs.
