The dropped catch turned out to be too costly for GT. Bowling first, the side was put under pressure in the early overs when Jonny Bairstow launched a blistering assault with his power hitting. Meanwhile, Rohit, who survived two easy chances, went on to play a match-winning innings of 81 runs off just 50 deliveries, including 9 fours and 4 sixes. He was awarded Player of the Match for his outstanding knock.
The champions of the 2022 edition, GT had a heartbreaking end to their campaign—a season to forget for the side. Having dominated the table for a significant period with consistent all-round performances, they surprisingly lost three consecutive matches, including the do-or-die Eliminator. However, the season wasn’t without its positives, most notably the rise of Sai Sudharsan. The 23-year-old became only the fifth player in IPL history to score over 750 runs in a single season.
