In a season where the Sydney Sixers have dominated the headlines, a moment of pure teammate solidarity at The Gabba has reminded fans why the “Magenta” squad is so tight-knit this year. During the 40th match of BBL|15 against the Brisbane Heat, Pakistan’s Babar Azam showed exactly why he’s a leader on and off the field by comforting his opening partner, Steve Smith, following a rare lapse in the field.
The incident took place on the final ball of the 5th over with Sean Abbott charging in. Heat opener Nathan McSweeney unleashed a powerful cut shot off a back-of-a-length delivery. The ball rocketed toward backward point, where Smith was standing significantly closer than usual to keep the pressure on.
Smith, known for some of the best hands in world cricket, reacted with a reverse cup above his head. However, the sheer velocity of the shot meant the ball didn’t stick, spilling out to the frustration of the veteran Australian.

Stationed nearby in the cover region, Babar didn’t hesitate. As soon as the ball went down and the over ended, Babar sprinted over to a dejected Smith. Instead of focusing on the missed opportunity, Babar offered a heartwarming consolatory pat on the back, sharing a few words to lift Smith’s spirits before the change of ends.
It was a significant moment for the Sixers’ faithful, seeing their two marquee international stars—who usually open the batting together—supporting each other during the defensive phase of the game.

This gesture comes on the heels of several high-pressure moments for the duo this season, including their record-breaking opening partnership against the Thunder. While there have been tactical debates in the middle during their batting stints, Babar’s immediate support for Smith in the field highlights the deep mutual respect and burgeoning “bromance” between the two.
