A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Bangladesh on Day 3 of the ongoing second Test between Bangladesh and Ireland at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, temporarily halting play and causing chaos in the stands. The tremors were felt at around 10:38 AM local time, prompting players, umpires, and spectators to rush for safety.

The earthquake, with its epicenter located in Madhabdi, around 40 km east of Dhaka, caused significant panic in the stadium. Both dressing rooms emptied as players and officials hurriedly moved out onto the field, looking for open spaces. Fans in the stands were seen anxiously searching for exits, with many opting to leave the stadium. The media center, situated at the northern end of the stadium, was also evacuated swiftly.

Some players were seen looking upwards at the floodlights, concerned they might sway due to the tremors. The tremor, which also affected parts of Kolkata and Guwahati, is being reported as a 5.7-magnitude earthquake, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), and was felt across much of Bangladesh and northeastern India.

After a three-minute interruption, play resumed, with Ireland at 165/5 in the 56th over. Despite the initial shock, the game carried on as the players regained their composure. Ireland lost two more wickets during the resumed session, and by lunch on Day 3, they were 211/7 in response to Bangladesh’s total of 476. While the earthquake caused a temporary disruption, the players and officials quickly refocused, and play continued in a tense but determined atmosphere.

Bangladesh have asserted their control over the ongoing second Test against Ireland in Dhaka, extending their lead to 253 runs at the tea break on Day 3. After posting a formidable first innings total of 476, the hosts were able to dismiss Ireland for 265, despite a valiant 75 from Lorcan Tucker. Bangladesh’s bowlers, led by Taijul Islam and Hasan Murad, put in disciplined performances, picking up multiple wickets.

At tea, Bangladesh were comfortably placed at 42/0 in their second innings, with Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shadman Islam unbeaten, racing towards a commanding position. Ireland’s fightback was stymied as they lost wickets in clusters throughout their innings. They had reached 175/5 at one point but could not build on the momentum, ultimately falling short of the follow-on target. The hosts will now look to press on and accelerate their advantage with the bat after tea.
