It was absolute carnage at the Wankhede Stadium tonight as Phil Salt and Rajat Patidar turned the iconic ground into a hitting range, leaving the Mumbai Indians’ bowling attack searching for answers. In a high-stakes clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and MI, the visitors put on a masterclass in modern T20 power-hitting.
Opening the batting, Salt was in a punishing mood from ball one. He didn’t just find the boundary; he cleared it with ease. Salt hammered a blistering 78 off just 36 balls, striking at an incredible rate of 216.67.
The highlight of his innings was a savage assault on Mitchell Santner, where he plundered 22 runs in a single over, including a hat-trick of towering sixes. Alongside Virat Kohli (50 off 38), Salt laid a 120-run foundation that silenced the Mumbai crowd.

If MI thought Salt’s dismissal would bring a breather, Patidar had other plans. Coming in with the platform already set, Patidar played what can only be described as a “video game” innings.
He reached his half-century in a lightning-fast 17 balls, eventually finishing with 53 off 20 deliveries. Patidar’s strike rate of 265.00 was fueled by 5 massive sixes, including a particularly expensive over from Mayank Markande that went for 21 runs.

While the middle overs saw a slight dip in momentum after the quick wickets of Salt and Patidar, Tim David ensured RCB finished on a high. Playing against his former side, David struck an unbeaten 28 off 15 balls*, targeting the death overs to push the total past the 240-mark. His late boundaries ensured that RCB maintained a run rate of exactly 12 per over.
Mumbai Indians now face a mountainous task. With the dew likely to play a factor, the MI openers will need to replicate RCB’s aggression if they are to pull off one of the greatest chases in IPL history.
