In a proud and emotional moment for Indian cricket, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) honoured Rohit Sharma by dedicating a stand in his name at the Wankhede Stadium. The tribute came as recognition of Rohit’s immense contribution to Mumbai and Indian cricket over the years. As wishes poured in from across the cricketing world, one heartfelt message stood out — that of former India head coach and batting legend Rahul Dravid.
Dravid, in his message, blended humour with admiration as he playfully suggested that Rohit had hit so many sixes at Wankhede that the authorities had no choice but to name a stand after him. He then praised Rohit’s journey, noting that while every cricketer dreams of playing at iconic venues like Wankhede and performing well — which Rohit has consistently done — very few imagine having a stand named in their honour. Dravid described the gesture as a fitting recognition of Rohit’s immense contribution to both Mumbai and Indian cricket.
“Hey Rohit, guess you hit so many sixes into those stands that they had to name one after you. But no, just congratulations! I’m sure there’s a young boy going into the iconic Wankhede Stadium, truly one of the great stadiums in the world. I’m sure you would have loved to play there. I’m sure you would have wanted to have some great performances there, which you have done. I’m not sure you dreamt about having a stand named after you. But that it has come to that and that you have one named after you, I think it is just a reward to your contribution to both Mumbai and Indian cricket,” said Dravid in a video shared by Mumbai Indians on X (formerly Twitter).

Dravid wished Rohit a wonderful day celebrating this special moment with his loved ones. Adding a touch of lightheartedness, Dravid looked forward to witnessing many more of Rohit’s trademark sixes soaring into the very stand that now bears his name. He also joked that whenever he needs tickets for matches at Wankhede, he now knows exactly whom to reach out to — Rohit himself.
“It’s truly well deserved. Congratulations! I hope it was a great day with family and friends. Looking forward to seeing a lot more sixes into the Rohit Sharma stand in all the games that you play and when I’m short of tickets in Mumbai, now that you’ve a stand, I know who to contact,” added Dravid.
