As the news of his death reverberated across the sporting world, heartbreaking visuals emerged of his funeral, illustrating the immense impact the cricketer had on his teammates and the identity of Afghanistan cricket.

The final rites of Shapoor witnessed emotional scenes as his former teammates gathered to bid him a tearful farewell. In widely shared videos and images from the ceremony, current Afghanistan captain and global T20 icon Rashid Khan was seen completely breaking down, visibly devastated by the loss. Shapoor was a central figure in Afghanistan’s historic rise in international cricket. Representing the nation in 44 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 36 T20 Internationals between 2009 and 2020, the left-arm fast bowler was revered for his high-octane celebration, streaming run-up, and fierce determination. He will forever be etched in folklore for hitting the winning runs against Scotland in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, securing Afghanistan’s first-ever victory in a World Cup tournament.

Behind his fierce on-field persona lay an equally valiant individual off the field. In October last year, Shapoor began facing severe health complications, later diagnosed as stage four haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). HLH is a rare, life-threatening hyper-inflammatory condition where the body’s immune system severely damages vital organs, bone marrow, and blood cells.

Recognizing the gravity of his illness, Rashid and Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) Chairman Mirwais Ashraf actively intervened to fast-track his medical visa, securing his admission to a specialized intensive care unit (ICU) in New Delhi on January 18. Throughout his multi-month hospitalization, former captain Asghar Afghan consistently shuttled between Dubai and New Delhi to remain by his bedside. Despite displaying brief windows of recovery, Shapoor’s fragile system succumbed to repeated secondary infections, dengue, and a critical drop in his red blood cell counts.

Honoring his lasting legacy, the ACB released a poignant tribute stating:

“Throughout his career, Shapoor served Afghanistan cricket with honour, courage and pride. Beyond his achievements on the field, he was a true source of inspiration for many young Afghan cricketers. His fighting spirit, determination, and love for the game gave hope to many and encouraged a generation to dream bigger.”

As the nation mourns, Shapoor leaves behind an indelible mark on the sport, remembered eternally as a warrior who bowled with his heart for Afghanistan.
