Bowling the first ball of his sixth over, Rashid sent down a slower and shorter googly that drifted in sharply after pitching on the stumps. Mehidy, looking to defend off the front foot, misread the variation completely and was beaten on the inside edge.

The ball struck him flush on the pads, and the appeal from Rashid was immediate and confident. The umpire’s finger went up without hesitation, and replays confirmed that the ball would have crashed into leg stump. Bangladesh managed to reach a total of 221 runs in 48.5 overs after opting to bat first in the opening ODI at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. The innings began on a shaky note as Afghanistan’s new-ball bowlers made early inroads, putting the visitors on the back foot. However, the experienced Mehidy (60) and Towhid Hridoy (56) showed remarkable composure under pressure, stitching together a valuable partnership that revived Bangladesh’s innings.

Both batters mixed caution with aggression, rotating the strike effectively and punishing loose deliveries whenever the opportunity arose. Mehidy, in particular, looked fluent against spin, using his feet well to counter the Afghan attack, while Hridoy anchored the innings with solid technique and clever shot placement. Their efforts helped Bangladesh recover from a difficult position to cross the 200-run mark, giving the bowlers something to defend on a surface offering turn and grip.

Afghanistan’s bowlers, however, continued to dominate the middle and late overs. Rashid was once again at his brilliant best, finishing with 3 wickets for 38 runs, including the crucial scalp of Mehidy that marked his 200th ODI wicket. Azmatullah Omarzai complemented him superbly with another three-wicket haul, exploiting both pace and movement to trouble the batters. Allah Ghazanfar also impressed, picking up two key wickets to ensure Bangladesh couldn’t build a bigger total.
