A breathtaking catch by Tom Banton emerged as the standout moment of the opening T20I between England and India at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street on Wednesday, as persistent rain eventually forced the match to be abandoned without a result. Although England never got the opportunity to begin their chase of India’s imposing 189/7, Banton’s spectacular effort in the field provided one of the biggest talking points from an otherwise weather-interrupted contest.
India had won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a competitive total thanks to explosive knocks from Abhishek Sharma and captain Shreyas Iyer. However, continuous rain after the innings ensured the hosts did not face a single delivery, with both teams forced to share the points.
England’s fielding was on point from the very start, and Banton set the tone with an outstanding catch to send back Sanju Samson cheaply. The moment came on the fourth delivery of the second over, bowled by Saqib Mahmood. Attempting to drive a full delivery just outside the off stump, Samson struck the ball firmly but couldn’t keep it down. Positioned at backward point, Banton reacted instantly, diving sharply to his right before completing a brilliant two-handed catch inches above the turf.
The stunning effort left Samson stunned as he departed for just one run, marking his third consecutive single-digit score in T20 internationals. Mahmood, meanwhile, celebrated an early breakthrough after receiving excellent support from his teammate in the field.

While Samson endured another disappointing outing, his opening partner Abhishek ensured India recovered in emphatic fashion. The left-handed batter launched a blistering assault on England’s bowling attack, hammering 59 runs from just 24 deliveries. His entertaining innings included six boundaries and four towering sixes, giving India an aggressive start in the powerplay.
Captain Iyer anchored the innings superbly after the early wicket. Mixing controlled strokeplay with timely acceleration, he compiled an impressive 68 off 47 balls to keep India in command through the middle overs. Shivam Dube added the finishing touches with a valuable 42-run contribution, helping India finish on a formidable 189/7 from their allotted 20 overs.
For England, Mahmood was the standout bowler, returning figures of 3/33 from his four overs while consistently troubling the Indian batters with his pace and accuracy. Unfortunately, the much-anticipated chase never materialised. Steady rain and gloomy conditions continued throughout the evening, leaving the groundstaff with little opportunity to prepare the outfield. After several inspections and delays, the umpires called off the contest without England facing a ball.
