The IPL 2025 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium was not only a spectacle of high-octane cricket but also witnessed a rare on-field altercation among Australian teammates. Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell, both stalwarts of Australian cricket, were involved in a heated verbal exchange that added an unexpected twist to the thrilling encounter.
The incident unfolded in the ninth over of SRH’s daunting chase of 246 runs. Head, showcasing his aggressive intent, dispatched Maxwell for consecutive sixes. However, tension escalated when Head attempted to create room on the subsequent delivery, only for Maxwell to bowl a quicker one that Head hit straight back. Maxwell’s act of throwing the ball back towards the keeper seemingly irked Head, leading to a verbal spat between the two.
As the over concluded, the exchange didn’t subside. Head continued to voice his displeasure, prompting Marcus Stoinis to intervene. However, Head, still visibly agitated, dismissed Stoinis’ attempts to mediate, even as the umpire stepped in to calm the situation. The altercation, though brief, was a rare sight, especially among players who have shared numerous victories on the international stage.

Post-match, Head downplayed the incident in a chat with broadcasters, stating, “It’s all fun. I think they probably bring the best and the worst out of you when you know each other and play each other so much. So, yeah, a bit of friendly banter between us, but it’s all good. I got to put up with them at home, so nothing to it.“
While the verbal exchange garnered attention, the match itself was a testament to the explosive nature of T20 cricket. SRH achieved the second-highest run chase in IPL history, successfully chasing down PBKS’s formidable total of 245/6 with eight wickets in hand and nine balls to spare.
The foundation of this monumental chase was laid by Abhishek Sharma, who played a scintillating innings of 141 runs off just 55 balls. His knock, adorned with 10 sixes and 14 boundaries, not only marked his maiden IPL century but also became the highest individual score by an Indian in the tournament’s history. Head complemented Sharma’s brilliance with a quickfire 66, and together, they forged a 171-run opening partnership, setting the stage for SRH’s historic victory.
