Vaibhav Suryavanshi turned heads during East Zone’s dominant outing against North East Zone in the Duleep Trophy 2026, producing an unexpected contribution with the ball. The teenage all-rounder was handed the ball by captain Ishan Kishan as East Zone looked to wrap up the contest and responded with two quick wickets in the same over.

East Zone had already taken complete control of the match after posting 467 in their first innings and bowling North East Zone out for 111. After being asked to follow on, the opposition found themselves in further trouble, with Suryavanshi adding to their problems with his part-time left-arm spin.

Suryavanshi was introduced into the attack as East Zone looked to accelerate the end of the match. The youngster immediately repaid Kishan’s faith by striking twice within just three deliveries. For his first wicket, Suryavanshi tossed the ball up outside off stump and invited Kishan Lyngdoh to attempt an attacking shot. Lyngdoh failed to get underneath the delivery properly and skied it towards the field.

Substitute fielder Denish Das showed good awareness to run back and complete the catch, giving Suryavanshi his first wicket. Two deliveries later, the 15-year-old produced another clever variation. He bowled a flatter arm ball that skidded on instead of turning. Imliwati Lemtur played for the spin but only managed to edge the ball, with Kishan completing a sharp low catch behind the stumps.

The two wickets reduced North East Zone to 79 for 7 and sparked celebrations among the East Zone players, with Suryavanshi flashing a wide smile as his teammates surrounded him.

Earlier, East Zone had posted a massive 467 after choosing to bat first. However, Suryavanshi had a disappointing outing with the bat, managing only eight runs from six deliveries. The left-hander started positively against Bishworjit Konthoujam, hitting his first delivery through mid-wicket for four before following it up with another boundary through the covers.

Konthoujam quickly changed his approach and bowled a tighter fourth-stump delivery. Suryavanshi attempted to force the ball through the point region but only managed to slice it towards gully, where the fielder completed the catch. Despite his early dismissal, Suryavanshi found a way to contribute later in the match.

His two wickets helped East Zone tighten their grip after North East Zone were bowled out for 111 and forced to follow on. With the opposition reduced to 79 for 7, East Zone moved significantly closer to completing a comprehensive victory.
