West Indies must play 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier despite two-time champion status

West Indies, two-time ODI World Cup champions, have been confirmed as participants in the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier. The Caribbean side currently sit 10th in the ICC ODI rankings, and with only two ODIs against India remaining before the September 30, 2026 cut-off date, even a clean sweep of those matches would not be sufficient to move them into the top eight.

Eight teams ranked highest in the ICC ODI standings on September 30, 2026, excluding co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, will earn automatic entry into the 2027 ODI World Cup. South Africa and Zimbabwe qualify by virtue of hosting the tournament. Afghanistan secured their automatic berth after a thrilling victory over Ireland in Belfast, joining Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England and Bangladesh among the direct qualifiers.

West Indies have now endured a difficult run through the qualification pathway in recent years. They missed direct entry to the 2023 ODI World Cup, then finished fifth at the Super Six stage of that Qualifier, which in turn meant they were absent from the 2025 Champions Trophy, a tournament they had last featured in back in 2013. Ireland are confirmed as the second Full Member heading to the Qualifier, as the other bottom-ranked non-host Full Member at the September 30 cut-off.

The 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier is scheduled to run from February 22 to March 23, 2027. A host venue for the event has not yet been confirmed.

Ten teams will contest the Qualifier in total. West Indies and Ireland enter as the two lowest-ranked non-host Full Members. They will be joined by the four highest-placed finishers from Cricket World Cup League 2 and the four teams that progress from the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.

The Qualifier Playoff will bring together the four lowest-placed sides from CWC League 2 and four nations advancing from the Challenge League. The format for that playoff stage is yet to be finalised. The Challenge League itself comprises 12 teams divided into two pools of six, with each pool completing three round-robin tournaments; the top two from each pool advance to the Qualifier Playoff. The new pathway structure has drawn criticism from Associate cricket communities.

The Qualifier winner earns direct entry into the second round of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Teams finishing second, third and fourth in the Qualifier will enter a Super Series first round, with the highest-placed side from that stage also progressing to the second round of the main tournament.

For West Indies, the Qualifier is the sole remaining route into the 2027 ODI World Cup, co-hosted by South Africa and Zimbabwe. The two-time champions, who claimed the trophy in 1975 and 1979, must navigate a ten-team competition to restore their presence at cricket's marquee 50-over event.
