West Indies pace sensation Shamar Joseph has been ruled out of the ongoing three-match ODI series against Bangladesh after experiencing discomfort in his shoulder. The 26-year-old quick, who was with the squad in Dhaka and was set to make a comeback after missing the Test series against India, has now been advised to undergo specialist consultation in England to begin his rehabilitation process. Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed the development on Monday, ending hopes of Joseph’s highly anticipated return to international cricket.
Joseph had been named in both the ODI and T20I squads for the Bangladesh series, which is part of West Indies’ ongoing preparation for their upcoming home season. However, recurring shoulder discomfort forced the team management to sideline him to prevent further complications. The medical team has recommended a rest period followed by detailed rehabilitation under specialist supervision. The pacer had previously missed the India Tests due to an unspecified injury earlier this year. His last professional appearance came in September during the Caribbean Premier League, where he featured in five matches for Guyana Amazon Warriors before being forced to rest.
His absence comes as a significant blow for the Caribbean side, which already faces mounting injury concerns ahead of crucial limited-overs fixtures. The Dhaka conditions were expected to favour Joseph’s pace and bounce, especially after the West Indies struggled with wicket-taking options in the first ODI, losing by 74 runs on a sluggish pitch. With Joseph now unavailable, the squad will depend heavily on their experienced seamers and all round options for the remainder of the series.

CWI has announced Akeal Hosein and Ramon Simmonds as replacements for the remaining two ODIs of the Bangladesh series. Both players were originally part of the T20I squad but have now been drafted into the ODI setup to add balance and depth. Hosein’s inclusion boosts the spin department, while Simmonds’ left-arm pace offers variety in a seam attack weakened by multiple injuries. The duo will remain part of the team for the T20I series as well, which will conclude the tour later this month.
Meanwhile, young left-arm fast bowler Jediah Blades has also been ruled out of the tour due to a stress fracture in the lower back. The 23-year-old will undergo rehabilitation at home and will miss the subsequent New Zealand tour as well. Blades’ injury leaves West Indies thin on fast bowling resources, placing added responsibility on the likes of Romario Shepherd, Alzarri Joseph, and Obed McCoy to deliver in challenging subcontinental conditions.
West Indies trail Bangladesh 0–1 in the series after a disappointing performance in the first ODI at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium on October 18. The final two games, scheduled for October 21 and 23, will now be crucial for CWI’s plans as they aim to build stability ahead of the T20 World Cup cycle. With key pacers side lined, the visitors will be looking for emerging talents to step up and make a mark on the international stage.
