West Indies (WI) and Nepal (NEP) are set to continue their ongoing T20I series by playing the second T20I. Both teams will lock horns at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah on Monday, September 29. The Nepal team won the first T20I of the series and leads 1-0.
In the first T20I, Nepal created history as they defeated the West Indies by 19 runs, registering their maiden win against a Full Member nation. Put in to bat, Nepal lost both openers inside the powerplay. Captain Rohit Paudel (38 off 35) and Kushal Malla (30 off 21) rebuilt the innings with a 58-run partnership. Gulsan Jha’s 22 and Dipendra Singh Airee’s 17 provided further push before Jason Holder’s three wickets in the 19th over derailed their expectations of going beyond 160 as Nepal posted 148 for 8. Debutant Navin Bidaisee was the standout bowler for the visitors with 3 for 29.
In reply, the West Indies lost Kyle Mayers early. Nepal’s bowlers, including Paudel, Kushal Bhurtel (2/17) and Lalit Rajbanshi (1/6) picked wickets at regular intervals. Despite cameos from Bidaisee (22), Fabian Allen (19), and skipper Akeal Hosein (18), the two-time world champions fell short, finishing on 129 for 9.
The pitch at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium has traditionally favoured batters, with conditions generally improving as the game progresses. The smaller boundary dimensions mean that batters can clear the rope with relatively fewer efforts and timing. However, the surface has often shown signs of being a double-sided support, which could bring spinners into play during the middle overs and make scoring a challenge.
Kyle Mayers, Ackeem Auguste, Keacy Carty, Amir Jangoo(w), Jewel Andrew, Jason Holder, Fabian Allen, Akeal Hosein(c), Navin Bidaisee, Obed McCoy, Ramon Simmonds
Kushal Bhurtel, Aasif Sheikh(w), Rohit Paudel(c), Sundeep Jora, Dipendra Singh Airee, Kushal Malla, Karan KC, Gulsan Jha, Sompal Kami, Nandan Yadav, Lalit Rajbanshi
The Nepal skipper Rohit Paudel looked in great touch in the first encounter and could be the best batter in the upcoming game. The right-handed batter smashed 38 runs off 35 deliveries, lacing his innings with three boundaries and one six. His efforts paid huge dividends as Nepal registered a historic win.
Veteran West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder will once again let his bowling do all the talking in the upcoming contest. Holder, in the opening game, bagged a four-wicket haul, including a triple strike in the 19th over. While the Windies ended on the losing end, the 33-year-old will once again look to use the conditions well and create challenges for the opposition batters.
