What is Virat Kohli's record at England in ODIs?
Virat Kohli returns to One Day International (ODI) cricket for the first time since January when India take on England in a three-match series commencing on Tuesday, July 14. The Men in Blue will be relying on experienced players, including the right-handed batter, to come good following their 4-0 loss in the T20 series last week.
Kohli returns to England to play white-ball cricket for the first time since 2022. The former India captain not only has a good track record against the Three Lions on their home soil, but also has excellent numbers in the three ICC events played in the country, including the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophies and the 2019 World Cup. He formed part of the team that won the former, beating England in the final.
First appearing in an ODI on English shores in 2011, the 37-year-old has played 33 matches in the country, which includes some of the most useful knocks in the history of Indian cricket.
Kohli scored his maiden ODI half-century in England in his first 50-over game in the country, hitting 55 at Chester-le-Street on September 3, 2011. However, some of his best knocks on English soil have not come against the home nation, instead coming against other opponents in ICC events.
The top-order batter registered his first and so far only ODI hundred a few weeks later, scoring 107 off 93 at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. India, however, ended up on the losing side, with England chasing down a revised target of 241 in 32.2 overs.
Two years later, Kohli would go on to play a crucial knock in the 2013 Champions Trophy final against England, helping India win the title. In a final reduced to just 20 overs, the right-handed batter top-scored with 43 off 34 balls, guiding his side to a defendable total of 129, with India eventually winning by five runs.
Four years later at the 2017 Champions Trophy, Kohli, now captain of the ODI side, hit an unbeaten 96, helping India beat Bangladesh in the semi-finals. Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, was the star of the show on that occasion, scoring 123 not out to take his side home.
