Who is Manav Suthar? India's next left-arm spin sensation who took 10 wickets in Galle

Manav Suthar has made an immediate impact on Test cricket. India's left-arm orthodox spinner produced a match haul of 10-131 in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, with his second-innings figures of 6-55 including three wickets in a single over, as India sealed a 165-run victory.

With his match-haul, Suthar has now picked up 17 wickets in his first two Test matches and has already established himself as a serious candidate for India's spin contingent of the future. Born on August 3, 2002, in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, Suthar was identified as an early talent, working his way up the age groups in domestic cricket.

Suthar made his first-class debut in February 2022 for Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy against Andhra Pradesh. His talent was immediately on display, picking up 44 wickets in his first eight games, including four four-wicket hauls, two five-wicket hauls and two ten-wicket match hauls. He made his T20 debut in October of that year against Madhya Pradesh.

He made his List A debut for India A in 2023 in the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup against UAE A, with his selection coming on the back of stellar performances in domestic cricket. He was picked up by the Gujarat Titans ahead of the Indian Premier League 2024, playing one match that season, but was a more regular feature in 2026. He earned a two-match County deal with Warwickshire in 2026, where he picked up 11 wickets, including a five-wicket haul.

Suthar's Galle display did not arrive without foundation. In his debut Test against Afghanistan in June this year, he claimed seven wickets in the match, opening with a first-innings return of 6-33.  With that haul, he became the seventh Indian spinner to pick up a five-wicket haul on Test debut. His figures in Galle also saw him become the youngest Indian spinner to pick up a ten-wicket haul in an away Test match.

Suthar also became the first Indian spinner since Narendra Hirwani to take two six-wicket hauls in his first two Tests. With 17 Test wickets across two matches and a match-winning performance in Galle already behind him, Suthar has given India's selectors a credible long-term option in the left-arm spin department, as they reach the final swansong of the legendary Ravindra Jadeja's career.
