Recent rumors suggested that batting legend Sachin Tendulkar is a frontrunner for the BCCI president’s post, a role vacated by Roger Binny. The speculation gained traction following a Dainik Jagran report in a leading daily and informal discussions allegedly held during a cricket series in England.

However, Tendulkar’s management firm, on Linkedin, has now issued a definitive statement to put an end to the widespread speculation. The official denial comes just weeks before the key elections that will decide the future leadership of the board.

“It has come to our attention that certain reports and rumours have been circulating regarding Mr. Sachin Tendulkar being considered, or nominated, for the position of President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). We wish to categorically state that no such development has taken place. We urge all concerned to refrain from giving credence to unfounded speculations,” SRT Sports management said.

The report by Dainik Jagran had stated that a legendary cricketer, known for shattering multiple records, was being considered for the role and that informal discussions had already taken place with a senior political figure in England. This move, if it had come to fruition, would have kept up a recent trend of former cricketers assuming top leadership roles within the Indian board, a precedent set by Sourav Ganguly and Binny. However, Tendulkar’s direct and immediate refutation of these claims has now drawn a clear line, confirming that the cricketing icon is not in the fray for an administrative position at this time.

With the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting scheduled for September 28, the top posts, including president and IPL chairman, are up for grabs. This follows the end of Roger Binny’s tenure, who, after turning 70 in July, had to step down in accordance with the BCCI’s constitution.

Rajeev Shukla has since taken over as the interim president, and he is widely regarded as a leading contender for the full-time role. The report noted that three scenarios are being discussed for Shukla: continuing as vice president, being elevated to BCCI president, or becoming the IPL chairman. This internal maneuvering highlights the intense politicking at play. The potential appointment of a high-profile cricketer aligns with the central government’s long-standing emphasis on increased athlete representation in sports bodies, a trend also seen with former sprinter P.T. Usha heading the Indian Olympic Association. The outcome of the elections will not only determine the new leadership but will also solidify the board’s future direction.
