Women's World Cup 2025, Match 9: 'The Beth Mooney Show' hands Aussies a come-from-behind win

Australia Women secured a comprehensive 107-run win against Pakistan Women in Match 9 of the Women's World Cup 2025 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday, October 8. This was Pakistan's third straight loss at the event, whereas the Aussies have maintained their unbeaten run in the tournament.

Opening batters Alyssa Healy and Phoebe Litchfield were dismissed in consecutive overs ahead of the powerplay as Pakistan asked them to bat first. Nashra Sandhu struck in her first over to get rid of Ellyse Perry (5 off 11). By the end of the 16th over, the Aussies were in deep trouble and were five down. At the halfway mark, Healy's side was tattering at 83/7, but Beth Mooney was still at the crease.

There were no boundaries scored for at least eight overs. Mooney got to her half-century on the first ball of the 34th over. Kim Garth's defiant 47-ball 11 knock came to an end in the same over. Sandhu finished her spell with three wickets with 37 runs. Mooney got to her ton right at the end. A 21-run last over propelled Australia to 221/9, as Alana King smashed her way to a maiden ODI fifty.

Garth returned superbly with the ball a short while later, as she accounted for three of Pakistan's top five wickets. Skipper Fatima Sana chopped on an Annabel Sutherland delivery on the fourth ball of the 13th over. Sidra Amin, who was the top-scorer in the game against India, was dismissed for 35 off 52 in the 22nd over. The subsequent over had the Women in Green in the dumps, with eight down.

Alana King's fifth over brought about Pakistan's ninth wicket. Rameen Shamim, who had earlier conceded only 29 runs in her 10-over quota, was the last wicket to fall. She fell for 15 off 64 to grant Australia a massive morale-boosting triumph. This win made Australia go to the top of the points table with five points. Unsurprisingly, Mooney was adjudged the Player of the Match for her one-of-a-kind knock under extreme pressure.

They will now face the Indian team in Visakhapatnam on October 12. Pakistan, on the other hand, play England next at the R. Premadasa Stadium on October 15. Pakistan cannot afford a lot of hiccups, as a loss in the upcoming encounter might end their chances of making it through to the knockouts of the global event.
