The much-anticipated 9th match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 took place on October 8 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, featuring defending champions Australia Women against Pakistan Women. Pakistan, yet to open their account in the tournament, elected to field first, looking to disrupt Australia’s strong batting lineup. Under lights, in hot and dry conditions, the Pakistani bowlers attacked with discipline, trying to put pressure on the Australian batters and prevent them from posting a big score.
The highlight of Pakistan’s bowling effort came in the 21.2 over from Rameen Shamim, who pulled off a remarkable piece of cricket to dismiss Australia’s Georgia Wareham for a duck. Shamim bowled a length delivery that fizzed through on middle and off stump and bounced just a little extra. Wareham attempted to push the ball to long on but misjudged the extra bounce, resulting in a sliced shot that popped straight back to Shamim.
The young Pakistani bowler showed great athleticism by tumbling to her right and taking a sharp two-handed catch despite the non-striker’s close presence. This caught Australia on the back foot, with the visitors now struggling at 76 for 7, well into a batting collapse.
Rameen Shamim follows through with a well-taken catch to get rid of Georgia Wareham 👌

Australia’s innings has teetered on the edge with wickets tumbling at regular intervals. After a solid start with 50 runs in the first 12.1 overs, Australia lost crucial wickets early on, including captain Alyssa Healy dismissed by Sadia Iqbal and Phoebe Litchfield falling to Fatima Sana. The middle order failed to capitalize as Nashra Sandhu combined with Shamim to dismantle Australia’s batting lineup. Ellyse Perry was stumped by Sidra Nawaz off Sandhu, while Annabel Sutherland and Tahlia McGrath also fell cheaply.
Shamim complemented the spin attack with disciplined bowling and two vital wickets, firmly tightening Pakistan’s grip on the match. Australia is staring at a low total, with only Beth Mooney and Alana King holding their ground.
