Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by seven runs to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive on Monday, October 20. The fans who had turned up to the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai witnessed a low-scoring thriller, which ended in a heartbreak for Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka posted 202/9 after opting to bat first. Hasini Perera's 99-ball 85 held the innings together after Chamari Athapaththu provided a blistering start at the top of the order. In reply, half-centuries from Sharmin Akhter and Nigar Sultana ensured that Bangladesh dominated most parts of the run-chase. However, they lost five wickets for four runs off the last 12 deliveries to crash out of the competition.

The Sri Lankan team management and the fans need to doff their hats to Perera for her gritty knock on a difficult surface for batting in Navi Mumbai. She came into the crease to face the second ball of the Sri Lankan innings after Marufa Akter sent Vishmi Gunaratne packing for a golden duck. Perera batted well despite losing partners from the other end. She was eventually dismissed for 85, a knock which comprised 13 fours and one six.

Chamari Athapaththu conceded nine runs in the 48th over of the innings. She had decent figures of 1/41 in nine overs at that stage. The veteran showed faith in her abilities and came up to bowl the last over, with Bangladesh requiring nine runs with five wickets in hand. Four wickets fell in the over, with Athapaththu accounting for three of them. She gave away just one run to finish with brilliant figures of 4/42.

Sri Lankan captain Athapaththu etched her name into the record books, becoming the first women's cricketer from her country to amass 4000 ODI runs. She got to this fantastic landmark during her flamboyant knock of 46 off 43 balls.

Interestingly, Perera had played 58 ODIs and 84 T20Is before the clash between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. However, she couldn't manage to notch up her first fifty in international cricket. The 30-year-old will be happy to have ended the drought in an important game for her side.

While Athapaththu impressed with her all-round efforts, the Player of the Match award fittingly went to Hasini Perera. In a close match and on a sluggish surface, her knock proved to be crucial and helped Sri Lanka post a 200-plus total.

Sri Lanka would consider that they went out of jail after Bangladesh were cruising along in the run-chase. However, Nigar Sultana and Co. couldn't win the battle with nerves and succumbed to the pressure of a do-or-die World Cup clash.
