WTC 2025-27 points table: India move to fifth after 165-run win over Sri Lanka

India defeated Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test at Galle on August 19, 2026, wrapping up a five-day contest that began on August 15. The result lifted India to fifth place in the World Test Championship 2025-27 standings, with their win percentage rising from 48.14% to 53.33%.

India now have 64 points from 10 matches in the current WTC cycle, having won 5, lost 4 and drawn 1. Sri Lanka remained in sixth place with 20 points from 5 matches, recording 1 win, 2 losses and 2 draws for a win percentage of 33.33%.

Manav Suthar was the standout performer across the match, claiming a maiden 10-wicket haul that proved central to India's ability to dismiss Sri Lanka twice and seal a comprehensive victory on a Galle surface that offered considerable assistance to spin.

India posted 462 in their first innings and then got dismissed for 193 in the second. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 284 in reply to the first innings total, leaving them with a target of 372 in the fourth innings. They could manage only 206 in that chase, falling 165 runs short.

Rishabh Pant was among the key contributors in India's second innings, scoring 66 off 69 balls, while Devdutt Padikkal added 44, building on his 167 in the first essay. Sri Lanka's pace attack offered some resistance: Asitha Fernando took 4 for 31 in India's second innings, the best figures by a Sri Lanka fast bowler at home since Suranga Lakmal's 4 for 29 in 2019. Suthar's 10-wicket haul across both Sri Lanka innings, however, ensured the hosts had no realistic path to victory.

Australia continue to lead the WTC 2025-27 standings with a win percentage of 77.78%, having won 7 of their 9 matches and lost 2, accumulating 84 points. South Africa are second with 75%, having won 3 and lost 1 from 4 matches for 36 points. New Zealand occupy third place with 72.22% from 6 matches, recording 4 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw for 52 points.

Bangladesh are fourth with 66.67% from 5 matches, having won 3, lost 1 and drawn 1 for 40 points. India's 53.33% places them fifth, 13.34 percentage points behind Bangladesh. Sri Lanka's 33.33% keeps them sixth in the current cycle. The second Test between India and Sri Lanka starts on Sunday, and its outcome will further shape the standings in the 2025-27 cycle.
