WTC Final 2027: India's qualification chances after Galle win

India registered a 165-run win over Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium in the first of two Test matches. Devdutt Padikkal's brilliant 167 in the first innings and Manav Suthar's 10-wicket match haul were the headliners of a complete performance from India. The Test series, which comes as part of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle, could have implications for whether they end up making their third final of the competition.

The Indians have played 10 games in the 2025-27 WTC Cycle, recording five wins, four losses and a draw. With eight more Tests left in their schedule, they will be looking to maximise their results in order to make their place. They sit in fifth place with a points percentage (PCT) of 53.33, and making the final would require them to maintain a similar consistency in their results.

India has eight Test matches left to play in the current cycle. After the second Test against Sri Lanka, set to commence on August 23, Shubman Gill's side will head to New Zealand in October to play two matches before closing off their cycle with five Tests against Australia in January of 2027.

A percentage score of 60% is often regarded as an appropriate score which could take a team to the WTC final. With India playing 18 Tests in the cycle, they will need to pick up at least 130 of the 216 available points to reach a percentage score of 60. The points are allocated as 12 for a win, 6 for a tie and 4 for a draw.

With the win in Galle, they have accumulated 64 points, which leaves them needing 66 points in the next eight Tests, which would mean picking up a minimum of five wins and two draws (68 points), six wins and one draw (76 points), or seven wins (84 points). With these scenarios, the Shubman Gill-led side can only afford to lose one match. If they are to lose two games, they have to win the remaining six matches, and any more losses would close the curtains on their campaign.

After the Sri Lanka series, India will have two difficult assignments – first, in New Zealand, where they have yet to record a victory since 2009, and a home series against Australia, which could prove to be a difficult contest. They will need to maximise their results against two challenging adversaries if they are to make their third WTC final.
