‘You have to back your instincts’ - Shreyas Iyer reveals his mindset before ‘epic’ shot against Bumrah in IPL 2025

Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer reflected on one of the standout moments from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 second qualifier, his memorable shot against Jasprit Bumrah, during a recent appearance. The PBKS skipper recalled how instinct and composure played a key role in that high-pressure situation.
The stroke, which came at a crucial moment of the knockout clash between MI and PBKS, not only showcased Iyer’s fearless approach but also underlined his ability to adapt against world-class bowling. Against Bumrah, who is known for his pinpoint accuracy and deceptive variations, Iyer’s execution stood out as a defining moment in the contest, earning praise from fans worldwide.
Speaking about the shot itself and his mindset while facing Bumrah, Iyer explained what went through his mind before playing in the way he did against arguably one of the best bowlers in the world at the moment.
“It was completely instinctive. I was trying to hit him straight down the ground. That was the thought at the back of my mind, that wherever he bowled, I would target him straight. When you get into that position, your head is completely still and your body moves in a certain flow. When you are facing probably the best bowler in the world, who executes his angles and deliveries magnificently, you have to back your instincts. To play that shot and direct it towards third man while the field was in, I appreciated it as well,” Iyer told JioStar.
He further also explained why he chose not to celebrate the moment, emphasising the importance of emotional control in crucial matches.
“I didn’t celebrate because I knew we had to come back and play there again after a day. If you show emotions, your heart rate goes up and down. Once you are in control of your emotions, you can be very clear in your mindset and decisive about the main goal,” the star cricketer concluded.
Under the leadership of Iyer in 2025, PBKS reached the IPL final for the first time in 2014. They have started brilliantly in IPL 2026 too, winning five of their first six games, and would want to make it count this time round, as the franchise still seeks its maiden title in the marquee T20 tournament.
