'Anyone thats wants a beer can have a beer' - Brendon McCullum updates alcohol guidelines for England cricketers

Brendon McCullum, England's head coach, has confirmed that players can enjoy a beer to celebrate their recent series triumph, saying that players can actually have a drink or two if they wish. McCullum confirmed England were allowed to celebrate Saturday's win against India with a beer after new guidelines were sent around following the incident in Chelsea.

England's commanding 4-0 series victory over India, secured by Jos Buttler and Harry Brook's record second-wicket partnership of 233 runs in 103 balls, has taken the Men in Blue to the top of the ICC's T20I rankings. The emphatic win came just days after the ECB introduced stricter behavioural guidelines following questions over player conduct during England's home Test series against New Zealand, in which captain Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson left their hotel after the first Test to visit a nightclub in Chelsea and were eventually involved in an undisclosed incident that resulted in fines and suspensions from the second Test.

"For a start, there's not many of our guys that actually drink, but anyone that wants a beer can have a beer, yes. The guidelines are in place. People are very aware of the guidelines. They've been sent around. The policy is designed to make sure that people are being looked after and making the right decisions," McCullum was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

"I trust the players completely. All the information is there. You still have to feel the warmth of success and if you are someone that likes a beer, then tonight is a great opportunity to be able to enjoy yourself - as long as it's sensible, and it's not to excess - and allow something that you've achieved over the last ten days or so sink in the way that you want it to. But everyone's very aware of it [the guidance] and I think we'll have a quiet beer and just let this one land - just as long as no-one lands on the front page," he added.

Under the revised guidelines, players are advised to avoid alcohol around match days, with the updated guidance recommending that they do not consume alcohol on the day before a match, during a match, or on the day immediately after it.

Head coach Brendon McCullum and director of cricket Rob Key retain the authority to relax the drinking guidelines when circumstances warrant, allowing players to celebrate notable victories or take part in long-standing traditions, such as sharing an end-of-series drink with the opposition after an Ashes campaign. The updated measures aim to provide a consistent framework for player conduct throughout international assignments while allowing team management discretion in exceptional situations.

The behavioural guidance applies only to England's senior men's teams, with England's women's teams not covered by formal alcohol rules. England will now look to maintain their top ranking and momentum as they prepare for their upcoming international fixtures.
